Leading Your Team To Success: Top Tips

By Johnathan Black

Being in a position of leadership can seem very exciting at first - think of all the power you have right at your fingertips! But along with power comes great responsibility, responsibility which can quickly seem overwhelming. By taking the time to learn about traits of effective and fair leaders, you will be doing your company a great service.

Be a communicator. Communication is a major aspect of what makes great leadership. If you can't communicate your goals and vision, then what is there for your employees to follow at all? If you have a tendency to "loan wolf" at work, break out of that habit and begin communicating with your teams.

Acknowledge any mistakes that you make. Even the best leaders will make the occasional mistake. A great leader should be able to take responsibility and admit this error to others. This shows you have flaws and are imperfect, just like they are. This might not seem like a great way to lead, but in many cases people are loyal to those that can show humanity.

Communicate openly with your team. You must find your own voice. You also need to learn how to express it and how to trust it. When you have ideas and information, you must learn how to share them. Stay accessible and be willing to listen. Integrate your thinking into the whole. Be aware of how your style and presence affect other people.

You need to find the innate qualities in yourself that can help you become a good leader. Although you may not naturally tend toward a leadership role, there is some aspect of your personality that you can develop which will help you to take charge. With time, experience and practice, you can hone your skills and develop your leadership abilities.

Do what's necessary to promote group unity. This means making sure that everyone knows what tasks they need to perform and what everyone else is doing. This prevents duplicate effort. Also, make sure each member of the team keeps the others up to date on progress. This makes budget and time overruns less likely.

Integrity is essential to a good leader. The two best ways to pragmatically practice integrity are to always speak the truth and do what is right, especially when you think no one's watching you. People find it difficult to trust people with no integrity. Being true to yourself through having integrity, will allow other people to respect you and show loyalty.

Leaders can truly make or break a company. You have a lifelong responsibility to learn as much as possible about what it means to be a successful leader. Continue your education and do everything in your power to learn more about the nuts and bolts of effective and dynamic leadership.
