Starting A Career In The FMCG Area

The fast moving consumer goods sector is a great industry to choose to work in if you want to move up the career ladder quickly. Movement from an entry role position to a more senior role can happen quicker than in some other industries.

This brief article looks at the types of roles you may expect to see at various stages during your career within the FMCG industry. Once you begin your career in FMCG you will see exactly hoe many different avenues there are that are open to you.

As an entry level professional you should expect to take on at least two roles during this period such as a sales rep, assistant brand manager, HR advisor or manufacturing supervisor.

At manager level you will probably work in another couple of roles which cover different areas in order to build up your experience in people management. Roles that are typical of this career stage are brand managers, purchasing managers, HR advisors and key accounts managers.

Typical roles at this level include HR advisors, brand managers and key accounts managers. Roles vary largely depending on the type of FMCG products you are working with. Each sector is different.

The next stage on will be director level. To get to this stage you will need an impressive track record as well as lots of experience in people management. You will also need international experience in order to reach this level. Typically you will find roles such as finance controllers, global brand managers and finance controllers.

When you reach senior director level you will, of course, have a wealth of knowledge and experience within the FMCG industry. You will be expected to make a big impact at this stage and be comfortable making important decisions and have experience of at least two markets within the FMCG industry. Typical FMCG roles at this level include global sales director, global category manager and supply director.

When you reach the level of senior director you will undoubtedly have a wide knowledge base and lot of experience within the FMCG arena. At this stage you will be able to make a big impact in whatever role you undertake. Often jobs available at this level range from global sales director roles, supply directors and global category managers. The last stage of the career progression of somebody working within the FMCG is usually a senior executive role. You may expect to apply for roles such as senior vice presidents and global sales vice presidents.
