How To Achieve Your Goals In Five Simple Steps

By Lachlan Haynes

Success is something we all want in life. From the time we enter young adulthood, we always want to be successful in life, whether it be in our study, career, financial situation, or relationships. Success cannot be achieved, however, by simply wishing it! The first step to success is to set out the goals you want to achieve. But setting a goal and achieving it are two completely different things. To achieve a goal which you have set you need to (1) know exactly what it is that you want to achieve, (2) invest yourself emotionally in your goal, and (3) have a set modus operandi for achieving your goal. These are the three keys to setting goals which you will actually achieve, and this is what sets your goal apart from fluff-filled fantasies which may not come true. Below are 5 methods which have been proved over time to help get you over the crossing line to achieve your goals!

1. Know exactly what your goal is. Your first job is to discover exactly what your goal is. What will achieving that goal really look like? Be as specific as possible about exactly what your desired end result is. Your success will be a measure of your clarity - since an achievable goal plan cannot be created around a vague "dream."

Is your goal focused on trying to get into a certain college? Do you want to make more money? Would you like to become better organized? Once you set your goal, you need to define it clearly and completely. The more detail you include, the more likely your success. Envision how you will be or feel when you achieve that goal, write down steps you need to achieve in order to get there, and try to anticipate any possible road blocks along the way and how you will handle them. This can be challenging for some, but without this clear picture you will not have the proper focus to achieve your goal.

2. Be willing to pay the "entry fee". Success takes dedicated planning and effort. In a way it's like building a house. In the beginning all you have is a rough concept. Then you develop a complete set of plans - and you immediately move closer to success. The same is true of creating a better lifestyle, or to get better grades. But there's always an "entry fee" to be paid for success.

For example, trying to get into a specific college may mean less time for things you like to do, such as going out with friends. Likewise, wanting to become more organized may mean you have to get rid of some of the clutter in your life. All goals come with sacrifices but they are easily surmountable if you have defined exactly what you want and mapped out as we did in the first step. This step can be hard for many people but it is important that you allow yourself the time and willpower to get past it and make the sacrifices needed to achieve your goal.

3. Focus on your goal every day. Never underestimate the power of visualization! Putting your mental focus on your goal every day is what programs your brain to believing that you have it already. We always attract what we think. If you're constantly focusing on how achieving your goal is hard, then it really is hard! These are called limiting beliefs and most often they are deeply rooted in your subconscious. Instead, focus on what you do want to happen. Visualize it. Imagine that you have it already and feel like you have it already. This will trick your brain into thinking you have already achieved it, and then things will start rolling from there.

Re-commit to your goal every day. Don't let your goal take a back seat to the daily tasks and distractions that will try to take over. Life will try to get in your way. Just get, and stay, on course every day. Focus on your goal, and on your success!

4. Get passionate. Whatever it is you want to achieve success in, feel passion for it. This is a powerful tool to have in the "success tool box". Having an intense passion for your goal will sharpen your mental focus and build those mental bridges for positive thinking towards achieving your goal. This method has been proven scientifically over the years! Intense passion for your goal also drives away the limiting beliefs you have in your subconscious brain - thoughts that you cannot achieve your goal or that you don't have the means to achieve it.

5. Take consistent steps. The most difficult step for many people is taking the actual steps to reach your goal. The best course of action is to take one step at a time. Each small step will lead to bigger steps in your success. Think about it like building blocks. We can't create a castle with one big block; we need to take one small block at a time and build up to our ultimate goal. You cannot sit back and wait for that castle to build itself, you need to be proactive and make one small step toward your goal each day.

Remember, life is simply what you make of it. You can create the life you desire, provided you know what it is that you want and focus on it with passion. This intense passion and focus can only bear fruit if you take action. Don't just dream about it, do it!
