Womens Sober Living Homes Have A Positive Effect

By Grace Rivera

When leaving rehab many people still have issues that put their sobriety in jeopardy. Returning home without an adjustment period to learn accountability, and responsibilities associated with a sober environment are the reasons most fail. The benefits of womens sober living is that it offers independent living while keeping away temptations there may be in the home.

A sober living home is often mistaken for a halfway house or a homeless shelter. It is neither. They are instead houses or duplexes where a recovering addict can live in an alcohol and drug free surrounding with peers. The residents continue to learn how to cope with life, take responsibility, and are accountable for their actions. Residents are required to pay rent, work in the house, seek employment or be employed, or be a student in an accredited program.

A womens residence will allow children to live with their mothers in the home. This is a benefit for mothers who have to keep their family together for lack of another person being present in the family to do so. It also hones their coping skills and builds their confidence.

Most residents stay for at least ninety days and for as long as six months or more. There is no signage stating what it is so the outside is just as any other house on the street and there is no requirement to notify the neighbors what they are. They are also located in residential neighborhoods.

Most homes are affordable which makes it easier for a woman who is in between jobs be able to pay their rent and other expenses without the added worry of draining their family coffers. Some insurance policies will help with the cost. The houses are located in quiet residential neighborhoods.

There are also more luxurious homes available for those who can afford the additional cost. The term luxury does not mean they receive better counseling or treatment. All the residents still have to share chores, participate in house meetings with their peers, and follow any other house rules. The difference is in the amenities. A luxury sober living home will have high tech electronics, a chef preparing each meal or the meals will be catered. They will also have more luxurious furnishings, bedding, and be located in an upper middle class or upper class neighborhood.

All homes have rules that must be followed. Examples are that rent must be paid on time and often a share of utilities and the grocery bill. This helps to support the home but also helps the resident rebuild their own independence that may have been lost during their addiction. No substance abuse is tolerated. For this reason most homes do not allow certain common household items, such as specific brands of mouthwash that can be up to 52 proof, vanilla can be 70 proof, and cold medicines can be alcohol based. No violence, fighting, harassment, theft, sex on the premises, unexcused absence, or breaking curfew allowed.

Womens sober living homes have a positive effect for those suffering from substance abuse. It is a transitional home where a woman can get back her self-esteem while becoming accountable again for her actions. She also learns coping skills that will be a benefit in her continuing recovery.
