No More Stigma with Botox

By Andrew Wughin

Going under the knife with costly surgery is not as popular as Botox treatments. Cosmetic surgery is comparatively much more expensive, painful and uncomfortable, takes a longer time to heal, and comes with the possibility of complications. Botox on the other hand is relatively inexpensive, almost painless, requires no healing time and has almost no associated complications.

For over twenty years, Botox has been used safely for both cosmetic and medical purposes. There are a lot of myths about Botox. One of them is that it is poison being injected into patients. This is not accurate. It is a bacterium called clostridium botulinum that has been purified under very strict controlled conditions.

Don't Judge Botox by the Extremes

Even though Botox is so widely used, and with so many great results, there still exists a kind of a prejudice against the brand and those that seek out the procedure. Because it is a beauty treatment, it is often portrayed negatively in news reports. Pictures of celebrities showing unnatural cosmetic surgery and extreme treatments can be wrongly mistaken for being the result of Botox. A well trained physician who is experienced in Botox injections will not produce the kind of extreme examples noted. When administered carefully by an experienced practitioner there should be very little effect, if any, on the ability to produce natural facial expressions.

Why our Skin Matures

As we mature, our skin starts to lose its elasticity, leading to facial lines and wrinkles. It is easy to spot the most noticeable areas. These are areas where a lot of muscle use occurs. The forehead region, encompassing the eyes, and the mouth are pretty standard problem areas. A negative outcome of this can be a cheerless or overtired expression. Facial muscles need to be relaxed and Botox does just that. In the end, patients have an superior expression.

Over time, the natural expressions that we make, like smiling or frowning, cause wrinkles to appear and set in. A certain group of muscles is activated for each expression, and these muscles give rise to crease lines that form into permanent wrinkles. Botox attempts to prevent the formation of wrinkles by inhibiting these muscles from causing creases on facial skin.

The Day, What to Expect, and your Doctor

You will not be administered an anesthetic for this procedure, but before your treatment, your specialist may numb the injection site slightly. Normally, there procedure is quite fast. Usually, it will take under ten minutes. And there is no recovery time required, so you can go back to work or off to another errand if desired.

Botox courses are offered to doctors, dentists, assistants of physicians, and licensed nurses. Depending on where you are located, this may differ, however, it's important to understand that only physicians can buy Botox and it must be administered either by the physician or someone under their supervision.
