Useful Facts About Reading Disorders

By Essie Osborn

Learning is a major process for every child. Without this ability to learn or if a part of the process is damaged, the individual may have serious challenges in their life. They may have problems in their education, social life, personality and even self-confidence. Therefore, it is important that all reading disorders be treated immediately they are noticed.

Reading difficulties are caused by two major factors. These conditions can be caused by external factors. These are features that are triggered by the social life of the children such as their family and parents. The other factors are the linguistic and biological issues. These aspects are those that originate from the kids themselves.

Reading problems can be generated by biological and linguistic factors. These usually occur in the body of the affected individual. For example, some brain problems can also cause learning conditions in kids and even adults. Some children may also inherit these disabilities from their mothers or fathers through the genetic makeups that they get from their parents.

Learning problems can also be instigated by factors that are outside the body. These external issues tend to affect children who are sick and those that are not. These problems may be caused by the environment that the child lives in, their school, social life and family life. Usually, families that have a schooling culture tend to have children who love learning.

The affected child may have difficulties understanding letters, sounds and even words. This is normally referred to as dyslexia. It can affect the writing as well as the spelling. Some common symptoms of this condition include problems with word or letter recognition, reversal of letters or words, phonics and slow interpretation speed.

The learning process usually entails a wide range of components. For example, visual memory, ability to sequence, eye muscle coordination, capability of associating various sounds with their meanings and integrating visual signs with memorized phonetics. Therefore, if any of these constituents are distracted a learning difficulty may develop. However, with advanced technology these disorders can be detected easily.

If this problem is detected early, there is a higher chance that the treatment will be successful. Therefore, parents who detect any challenges in their children should seek medical help. Affected kids who go to curriculum based or intensive academic preschool programs are detected early compared to children who delay their schooling.

After the problem is identified, a detailed therapeutic program can be created. Treatment involves medication, positive reinforcement, individualized tutoring and corrective book learning exercises. These strategies assist the learners to decode, understand and recall written information. Therefore, it is important for the child to be treated by an occupational or educational professional.

Most parents do not know how to handle children who have learning disabilities. Therefore, it is important for them to educate themselves about these conditions so that they are in a better position to assist their children. This way, they will not have worries of their children being considered slow readers or be enrolled in classes that appear to be less challenging.
