Am I A Hoarder Or Not?

By Maria Wright

When one would think of hoarders, he would usually think of messy people who seem to keep a lot of stuff in their houses. While this is usually just because of habit or laziness, there are some cases wherein hoarders actually have an obsessive compulsive disorder already. This is why many cannot seem to get their houses clean no matter how hard they try. For those who are asking themselves the question Am I a Hoarder with OCD, check out these signs.

In order to know whether one has an OCD, the first thing to do is determine whether one has trouble letting go of stuff. It is one thing to be lazy and just ignore those worthless things, but it is another story when one cannot seem to let go. If one keeps on finding some excuse to keep stuff that has no value, then it is a possible sign.

If one seems to have a lot of stuff in his or her house, that is definitely a problem that needs to be addressed. It does not necessarily have to be big stuff like furniture, but it can also be small stuff as well. If one just notices that things seem to get piled up a lot in the house, then it is most likely an indication already.

Another sign would be if one has a very easy time letting go of the stuff of other people. Comparatively, if one cannot let go of his own stuff but can easily let go of the belongings of other people, then he or she probably has a hoarding problem. One would want to check on this type of behavior if he or she believes he or she has this problem.

For those who are noticing that there are weird things sprouting out from some sections in the house, time to evaluate oneself. If one notices that are things such as mold, mildew, or even mushrooms then it is definitely a sign of too many things cluttered up in the room. This kind of health hazard should definitely not be ignored any further.

People who have this sort of disorder also tend to be very defensive when confronted or scolded about it too. For those who happen to feel more irritable when being confronted about the whole hoarding habit, then they might actually be a compulsive hoarder. If one notices that he or she exhibits this behavior, then it is time to take some action on it.

The bad part about being overly defensive when being confronted about the problem is social isolation. For most people with a hoarding problem, they would often shun people who seem to not understand them. This might prompt them to stay away from people as a whole.

For those who are already noticing some signs such as these, then it might be high time to seek help. Fortunately, there are many ways to be able to treat this type of disorder with therapy being one of them. It is better to just nip it in the bud rather than let it be and slowly progress into something worse.
