Lucid Dream Meaning From A Scientific Perspective

By Catherine Thomas

When most people talk about lucid dreaming, they would immediately think of the spiritual aspect of the practice. In fact, it is interesting to note that the term in itself refers to clarity or having clarity while being in the dreamworld. To shed a nice light on the topic though, it is important to look at the lucid dream meaning from both a spiritual point of view and a scientific point of view.

Now, according to Buddhist and Hindu beliefs, the dreamworld is a place wherein one is asleep and moves by default without being able to control oneself. However, becoming more aware of oneself in the dreamworld, one then becomes more self aware as a person and has an ability to know the truth. With that, the person is becoming more and more in tune with the universal truth that everything is an illusion.

Now, one can actually relate this type of self awareness to his or her self awareness in the waking world. According to spiritual beliefs, those who are self aware in the dreamworld are actually also self aware in the waking world and have this innate ability to seek the truths of the world. One can boldly say that those who dream lucidly are actually gifted with natural wisdom.

Now, the science world has also tackled this phenomenon and has found some interesting facts that may connect it to the spiritual world after all. Two researchers from the University of Lincoln in the UK studied people who have dreamt lucidly and made some conclusions with the findings. Their initial hypothesis was that those who do have a special cognitive penchant for solving complex problems.

In order to test this theory, they studied sixty eight students from ages eighteen to twenty five. They all recorded their experiences with their dreamworld journeys in which they were then asked to solved some puzzles that were rather complex. The hypothesis was that the lucid dreamers could handle these complex puzzles better than those who do not control their dreams very often or those that cannot at all.

The results of the study showed that the frequent clarity dreamers solved twenty percent more puzzles than those who never dreamt lucidly or those who rarely did. The conclusion that they drew from there is that people who have this ability are more creative when it comes to seeking solutions than others. That is actually why this phenomenon happens more in children than in adults.

The researchers then added that these people are able to take on the most complex problems and make them simple. This is a cognitive ability that most people have a hard time acquiring. In fact, some of the methods that these people come up with are not the types that average people would think.

If one would tie this back to the spiritual implications of lucidly dreaming, both scientific and spiritual meet. In the spiritual world, these people are natural truth seekers while in the scientific world, they are complex problem solvers. With that, there is definitely a logical and deeper meaning behind this type of phenomenon.
