By Robert Johnson

These are a combination of perceived values and attitude towards an occupation. Being aware of these will help you make a well informed and intelligent choice on the occupation to take. Making the right choice prevents you from suffering dissatisfaction and frustrations. Every person has a different work orientation. Therefore, the approach of every individual towards work will be governed by specific values and priorities that are unique. Below is a discussion about a career anchor.

Autonomy or independence. People who lie in this category use their own rules and procedures to work. They want to remain independent from other people as much as possible, and hence they will work using their own pace, time and format. They are comfortable when they work alone. These kinds of people prefer being self-reliant, free and independent, and therefore they will give up promotion and transfers to achieve such. They can leave jobs to start their own when there is a lack of varied work and fixed working hours. They include people such as teachers.

The technical or functional competence. The jobs they prefer to take include being system analysts and engineering. The people around here are quite knowledgeable. They like being challenged and use their skills to do the work better than others. These people identify themselves with their specialty and hence their ability to succeed and get recognized in their specialty defines their self-concept. The production of useful work and content in their areas of specialization forms their motivation.

The ones that seek, security. People who lie in this category are those who are afraid of working in areas of uncertainty and risks. Their primary determining factor when it comes to their ability to live their life is continuity and stability. Their main preference in a working environment is the provision of stability and security rather than challenges.

General managerial competence. The main feature of people here is that they want to become managers and always want to rise to the top. Their main motivation is rising on the corporate ladder to take the most top responsibilities. Emotional, interpersonal and analytical areas are well known to them. Emotional competence is the capacity of a person to remain calm during emotional times by staying proactive and energized. Analytical competence helps in identifying and analyzing problems to develop solutions for each. These help these persons take up those leadership positions.

Creativity in entrepreneurship. The objective of these people is to produce both a marketable and a profitable product and service regardless of technology and intellectual discipline. They believe that large monies should characterize success. So, they will spend very less time working for others and become active working in their enterprises. Taking risks and overcoming obstacles is their motivation. They like taking assignments that are challenging.

The lifestyle anchor. They believe that work is not the only component of life. They think that life should be balanced with various interests. Their career life is composed of learning, friends, family, hobbies, leisure and recreational activities.

Service and dedication to a cause. They live working for others. Their motivation is in the dedication of their work around living to serve others. They include nurses, therapists and others who work in supportive occupations. Money does not motivate them.
