The Benefits Of A Personal Life Coach

By Cathy Mercer

The reasons as to why one would hire a personal life coach are numerous. Their exact role may not be clearly defined but their importance cannot be overemphasized. These individuals do many things. Each has their own style of dealing with their clients. Regardless of the methods used, the objectives are more or less the same as they all focus on helping an individual get the knowledge and skills necessary to help them survive through various situations.

Instructors are needed at virtually all ages in life. They will, for example, help an adolescent deal with the challenges of growing up and to make good choices of role models. The young adult needs advise on how to choose a spouse, a career or an opportunity for investment. They need to be told how to make the most of their prevailing circumstances. The elderly also need some advice on how to enjoy their last years of life.

There are several methods that can be used by the trainer. The main ones in current usage are the use of telephones and face-to-face interviews. The effectiveness of these two methods has been found to be the same according to research. The telephone method is, however, widely preferred mainly due to the convenience associated with it. The client and the instructor can communicate at any time form virtually any geographical location.

Life coaching requires that a person generates solutions to their problems form deep within them. This is in contrast to what is done in related fields where the counsellor tries to give advice from their perspective. Each session aims at developing an individually wholly and not just imposing short term solutions on them. Since it is driven by both the client and the instructor, this approach often yields very good results.

An effective coach is one who does not make assumptions about the needs of their clients. They do not judge and dictate instructions to the clients. They simply provide an environment that allows their clients to reflect on various issues and make informed decisions. This is the only way to ensure that the solutions will be long lasting. For this reason, the instructors have emerged to be more of facilitators than teachers.

Life instructors also need to have empathy towards their clients. This attribute will help the instructor look at the situation from the point of view of their client. The instructor is able to feel the emotions that their client is feeling. As a result they will help in the generation of ideas and solutions that are more effective in meeting the desired goals and objectives of the client.

This area has become a career choice for many people apart from being a source of inspiration for many others. The number of professionals in the field has been on the increase in recent times. This is mainly attributed to a number of reasons one of which is the fact that those who have benefitted in the past want to give back. The other reason is that there is minimal training required here compared to other fields.

Differences and similarities exist between a psychologist and a personal life coach. The main difference is that psychologists work by providing solutions whereas the coach relies on the client to generate their own solutions. The similarity is that in both cases, one will have to have very good listening skills if they are to pick the problem and to advise their clients appropriately.
