Lively Delivery With Funny Sermon Illustrations

By Andrea Davidson

Funny sermon illustrations make services lively and help the preacher to put the readings in perspective. They may be used at the beginning, in the middle or the end of a homily. They lift the mood of the congregation and help the people to refocus after a long session. Experts have suggested that they are more memorable than the plain sermon and have a long lasting effect.

They come in different categories to cover for the needs of each group of faithful. Some are perfect for children, adults, elderly, mothers, fathers, etc. Others can be used across generations and still have the expected impact. It is important for pastors to ensure that they deliver the right illustration to the right people and at the right time. Some are perfect for Christmas while others are fit for Easter.

The topic may vary from one illustration to the other. There is a story of a boy who sat at the door when the dad was returning home in the evening. His head was fallen and the dad could not understand why. In a father-son tone of conversation, the dad asked what was wrong. The boy said to him that he too was fed up with the woman in the house. That would apply during a session for couples to illustrate children relation.

Another story is told of a man who only attended church once a year during Christmas. The pastor would stand by the door and welcome the faithful telling them to join the army of the Lord. When his turn came, the pastor enquired why he only appeared at the church once a year. The man said that he was an ardent follower but was working for the secret service in the army of the lord and that is why the pastor could not see him often.

The mechanical nature of responses given by faithful during services became a matter of concern one morning when the sound system developed a problem. On normal days, the pastor would open with the words, The Lord Be With You. The normal response was, And Also With You. On the fateful morning, this pastor would not begin with the usual opening but would point out that the microphone was faulty. The congregation in their normal mechanical response replied, And Also With You.

Another illustration is used to show the important days a man goes to church. They are during baptism, on his wedding day and on the day of his burial. The progression of activity is hilarious since on the first day, water is thrown to him. On the second, friends use rice while during burial, they are fed up and have to use dust.

For pastors, a wife came home tired from Christmas festivities. The husband, who was a pastor, could not understand since it was he who delivered all the sermons and not the wife. You can imagine the shock when the wife said, It is me who had to listen to all of them.

Funny sermon illustrations will make homilies memorable and practical. Faithful can easily follow the flow during the session and have something to discuss after church. After all, the same verse can be given different meanings when the approach is altered through an illustration.
